There is even a little bit of local social history behind the Wispa.
The plumbers and mechanices who put in the machines were recurited from Hull and sworn to secrecy. They lived in the hotels on the Hagley Road and regularly drank in the Bear and Old Talbot each weekday evening.
Eventually some of them even settled down and married local girls. Whether any still live in Bearwood I do not know, but the Wispa project certainly boosted the profits of local pubs, chippies and curry houses for about a year.
